Context:
During a crisis response, psychosocial assistance aims to promote, protect and support the well-being of crisis-affected populations, with activities aimed at reducing psychosocial vulnerabilities, promoting community resilience and ownership, and supporting aid that considers psychosocial and cultural diversity issues.
Under the overall supervision of the Chief of Mission, the direct supervision of the Emergency Coordinator and in collaboration with the Project Managers in the Health Department and the Transition and Recovery Department at IOM Burundi, the successful candidate will primarily be responsible for implementing and contributing to expanding IOM Burundi’s psychosocial projects.
Core Functions / Responsibilities:
Assist with the establishment of the Psychosocial Support (PSS) unit within the Department of Emergencies and ensure implementation of psychosocial support activities through overall coordination of the psycho-social support mobile teams on the ground, supporting their deployment and tracking of activities to ensure achievements of targets.
Recruit, train, supervise and provide guidance to psycho-social national staff, and assist with the administration of related HR requirements to facilitate successful team operation.
Set-up mobile psycho-social teams, to strengthen positive dialogue and reconciliation mechanisms for communities who have experienced trauma or violence during their migration and displacement.
Provide technical and direct managerial oversight to the project assistants supervising the PSS teams through provision of weekly supervisions, on the job training and field monitoring of the activities to ensure quality standards are met are in line with the relevant guidelines and project indicators.
In coordination with the supervisor, develop a capacity building plan for the PSS mobile teams and coordinate its implementation.
Ensure that the PSS teams will provide a community-based psychological support system for identified conflicts, through activities for stress reduction, individual, family and / or group counseling, group activities such as group talk, art therapy, social therapy and psychotherapy.
Supervise and develop training courses on psychotherapy and therapeutic-expressive activities.
Ensure consolidation of reports from the PSS teams and provide inputs for weekly and bi weekly reports as well as for any other relevant documents being developed.
Participate in the development of new projects in coordination with the project officer based on identified needs during project implementation.
Monitor and provide suggestions regarding the integration of cross-cutting issues such as protection, gender, child protection, counter trafficking and other vulnerable groups are included in the project implementation.
Undertake duty travel within the country when necessary.
Perform such other duties as may be assigned.
Required Qualifications and Experience:
Education
• Master’s degree in Psychology, Sociology, Mental Health, Criminology or a related field from an accredited academic institution with two years of relevant professional experience; or
• University degree in the above fields with four years of relevant professional experience.
Experience
• Strong experience in providing psycho-social assistance and/or mental health assistance;
• Relevant experience in working with vulnerable migrant groups including internal displaced persons, refugees, victims of trafficking, returning migrants as well as host communities;
• Experience in remotely managing teams;
• Proven good communicational, analytical, interpersonal and organizational skills;
• Work experience in technical writing, editing, and reporting in English;
• Demonstrable knowledge of political and humanitarian issues and/or work experience in the
Great Lakes.
Languages
Fluency in English is required. Working knowledge of French is an advantage.
