Established in 1951, IOM is a Related Organization of the United Nations, and as the leading

UN agency in the field of migration, works closely with governmental, intergovernmental and

non-governmental partners. IOM is dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all. It does so by providing services and advice to governments and migrants.

Context:

The Department of Operations and Emergencies (DOE), through its four divisions as well as specialized projects and programmes, oversees IOM’s activities on all aspects of migration crises. It coordinates IOM’s participation in humanitarian responses and provides migration services in emergencies or post-crisis situations at both the individuals and community levels. While also engaging in global processes, the Department provides technical support to field efforts, delivers strategic recommendations on both policy and operational issues and provides guidance to field operations on project development and implementation and inter-agency coordination.

The Intern will work under the guidance and supervision of the Senior Migration Crisis Analyst, DOE. The Senior Administrative Assistant and other project or division heads will oversee specific activities coming under their portfolio, if required and in coordination with the direct supervisor.

In addition to the work of its divisions, the DOE Director’s Office (DO) oversees the Department’s internal as well as IOM-wide coordination, policy development, knowledge outputs (research, assessments, reviews), and contributions to the Inter-Agency Standing Committee (IASC) on Humanitarian Affairs.

Core Functions / Responsibilities:

The Intern will focus on supporting and assisting the departmental coordination, research, data analysis, editing and other activities. The Intern will have the following specific duties and responsibilities:

• Attending internal and external meetings and preparing clear and concise notes for circulation;

• Compiling weekly Senior Management Team meetings’ minutes;

• Collecting information on the work of each departments’ division and unit and preparing the periodic departmental newsletter;

• Preparing focused research and strategic data and policy analysis;

• Responding to sudden requests for background information, and document fact-checking.

• Supporting DOE’s preparation of social media and promotional material, including the creative design and lay-out external documents;

• Responding to requests on behalf of the department (collecting documents, supporting meeting preparations, background information, power-point presentation preparations etc);

• Consolidating and editing departmental input;

• Liaising with team members of other divisions on thematic issues

• Perform such other duties as may be assigned.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

Education

• Master’s degree in Political Science, International Relations, Humanitarian Affairs, International Affairs, Law, Publications Development Studies, Communications or related discipline. Experience will also be considered in the absence of a Master’s degree.

Experience

• Strong background in research, analysis and English language editing;

• Computer literacy, especially database tools, statistical analysis and preparing complex charts and tables;

• Strong organizational skills;

• Proven capacity in problem-solving and creative thinking;

• Ability to work effectively, accurately and concisely, including when working against sudden, tight and demanding deadlines; and

• Practical experience of how to multi-task, prioritize and work independently.

Languages

• Fluency in English is required. Working knowledge of French and/or Spanish is an advantage.

The incumbent will acquire technical knowledge in the Operations and Emergencies (DOE) Division.

He/She will also gain in-site experience in working with an international organization.
