Organizational Context and Scope

Established in 1951, IOM is leading inter-governmental organization providing services to governments and migrants in the field of migration. With 146 member states and offices in more than 100 countries, IOM is dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all. As an important function of its mandate, IOM is the Cluster Lead Agency for Camp Coordination and Camp Management (CCCM) for natural disasters under the 2005 IASC Humanitarian Reform.

Under the overall supervision of the Global Camp Coordination and Camp Management (CCCM) Cluster Coordinator, the successful candidate is responsible for the provision of support to the overall scientific, technological and artistic aspects of developing and producing maps and cartographic materials (including graphics, illustrations and layouts) presenting complex information as diagrams, charts and spreadsheets, as well as in the form of conventional maps in relation to the implementation of Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) worldwide.

Responsibilities and Accountabilities

  1. Collect and analyze humanitarian geographical data and create maps and other graphical products that rapidly provide visual summary of situations.

  2. Measure, analyze and interpret geographical information to create maps and charts, plan workflows with different team members, including data managers, GIS, models, etc, in order to produce required products.

  3. Research, select and evaluate map source data for use in the preparation or revision of maps, graphics, illustrations, layouts and charts to various scales.

  4. Identify topics and patterns for Atlas of migration in West Africa, Horn of Africa and Asia.

  5. Acquire, organize and maintain geographical and related data that support analytical humanitarian products.

  6. Improve and promote DTM products and participate in initiatives to enhance understanding of humanitarian and displacement patterns through mapping and data visualization at the global and in the field level as required.

  7. Examine and compile data from ground surveys, reports, aerial photographs, and satellite images to prepare thematic maps.

  8. Revise existing maps, graphics, illustrations, layouts and charts to make corrections, adjustments, and updates. Check the accuracy offinal products.

  9. Provide relevant technical support to DTM countries of implementation both remotely or on-site as required.

  10. Provide visualization guidelines to field missions.

  11. Perform such other duties as may be assigned.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor degree and 3 years of relevant experience or Master degree and preferably 2 years of relevant experience in information management, geography, geomatics, topographic science, cartography, geographic information systems (GIS), earth sciences, or related field or equivalent combination of a degree and work experience.

  • Good understanding of humanitarian issues, online publishing/journalism and web technologies.

  • Extensive experience with technical DTM system development, humanitarian emergency operations, displacement/migration flows and population mobility.

Languages

Required: Fluency in oral and written English and working knowledge of French.

Advantageous: Other UN languages
