Nature of Internship: Under the overall supervision of the Chief of Mission, and the direct supervision of the Project Manager, the successful candidate will contribute to the implementation of IOM Tajikistan Community Stabilization and Emergency Unit programming. Specifically, the Intern will have a special focus on shelter and settlements activities within the unit.
Core Functions / Responsibilities:
- Assist in the overall implementation of Community Stabilization and Emergency Unit activities, with particular focus on shelter and settlements;
- Provide support to project staff on survey design, data collection and analysis, and editing of research into local building practises in Tajikistan;
- Assist in drafting, designing and editing publications related to shelter and settlements;
- Assist project staff in conducting focus groups and key informant interviews with stakeholders related to local construction techniques and shelter;
- Contribute to IOM’s role as Camp Coordination and Camp Management (CCCM) sector lead in Tajikistan;
- Conduct desk research and analysis related to local building techniques, heritage building, disaster risk reduction, and innovations in shelter and settlements relevant to Tajikistan and Central Asia;
- Assist programme staff in the development of new projects related to shelter and settlements through drafting and editing project documents;
- Participate in meetings with UN agencies, national partners, international agencies and other stakeholders where required;
- Coordinate where appropriate with other IOM missions and offices in the wider region in relation to shelter initiatives ;
- Assist project staff in the implementation of community stabilization activities related to livelihoods, vocational training, and community infrastructure;
- Support the unit in emergency preparedness and response activities;
- Undertake duty travel in the company of project staff;
- Perform other relevant duties as may be assigned;

Required Qualifications and Experience
Education
• Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture, Urban Planning; Engineering; Development Studies, Humanitarian Studies; Disaster Management; Social Sciences; or a related field;
• Enrolment in, or recent completion of, a Master’s degree in a relevant subject is an advantage;
Experience
• Experience in architecture, design, and publication software;
• Knowledge of Tajikistan and/or Afghanistan and Central Asia is advantageous;
• Experience and competence with Microsoft Office is required;
Languages
• Fluency in English is required.
• Knowledge of Tajik or Russian is an advantage.
Other:
A monthly stipend will be available for the successful candidate. In line with IOM policy, interns are responsible for paying all costs related to: airfares; visas; accommodation.
